Pronounceable passwords for easier typing

This mode creates syllable-like blocks that remain random. They are easier to read and type, but they are not dictionary words.

Before you start

  • Blocks are selected with the Web Crypto API.
  • More blocks create more possible combinations.
  • Easy pronunciation does not guarantee strength.
  • Increase blocks and use a second factor for critical accounts.

What the generator actually produces

The pronounceable mode combines consonants and vowels into short segments and makes every choice with cryptographic randomness. The result is easier to read aloud or type accurately than a completely irregular string.

This differs from a classic passphrase made from several words selected from a large vocabulary. Because these segments are not words, pronounceable password is the more accurate name.

How to increase resistance

Each block is chosen from 4,950 combinations. More blocks increase the possibilities; enabling numbers adds one random digit per block. Fixed separators and capitalization help readability and compatibility but add no randomness.

This estimate describes this generator’s sampling process. It does not measure account protection against phishing, reuse, malware or breaches. Do not truncate or edit the result to include personal information.

  1. Use six to eight blocks for more sensitive accounts.
  2. Generate a different password for each service.
  3. Store the result in a password manager.

When this mode helps

It is useful when you must type a credential into a TV, console, router, or another device where copy and paste is awkward. For credentials that stay in a manager, a long random password is usually more compact.

Never send a password through ordinary email or chat. Prefer a service or manager feature designed for secure sharing.

Check length and compatibility

Generate the result and check its final length before registration. Blocks have varying lengths; separators and digits count toward the service’s limit.

If it does not fit, regenerate with compatible settings; do not silently truncate it.

For a master password, follow your manager’s process. Pronounceable mode is not a Diceware word list.

Pronounceable password FAQ

Is this a Diceware passphrase?

No. The current mode generates random pronounceable blocks, not words selected from a Diceware list.

Is it stronger than a random password?

Not necessarily. Compare estimated entropy and choose enough length. A random password may offer more combinations in fewer characters.

Can I memorize the result?

Yes, but keep a protected copy in a password manager as well. Memory is not a recovery plan.
